10 Money Saving Tips for Summer

It is that time of year again—yay! Summertime is great in so many ways, but it can also be a time when our expenses get a little out of control… family vacations, kids’ camps and activities, eating out/entertaining, etc.

Here are some quick tips to keep costs down and still have so much fun!

1. Make a budget. And, stick to it!

Know what you can spend (typically, no more than 70% of your income should be spent on expenses).

2. Map out the things you’d like to do.

What does that look like calendar- and expense-wise?

3. Sign up early!

Many camps and activities fill up fast and/or offer a price break for early registrants.

4. Check out local resources for free and low-cost events.

Many towns and cities have blogs dedicated to local happenings or events—many of them free. You can also check with Parks & Rec or your community’s Chamber of Commerce.

5. Get outside!

Summer is the perfect time for picnics, playing at the park, bike rides, and hiking. Good for the body, the soul, and your wallet.

6.  Grow your own food.

Having just a tiny garden, with the things you eat most often, that can be expensive at the store (think herbs and berries) can save you a ton.

7. Jump on the preserving bandwagon.

It’s fun to can, dry or freeze your own food. Stock up on quick and easy jams, salsas, veggies and fruit. Not only will it save you money, but then it can taste like summer all year long!

8. BBQ or have appetizers for dinner.

Some of my favorite summer meals consist of grilled veggies or a platter of bite-sized food. Salami, cheese, bread/crackers, fruit and veggies for dinner? Absolutely. Less time in the kitchen = more time to play.

9. Pare down.

Summer is a great time to donate or sell outgrown or unused items.

10. Use less electricity—give your dryer, heat and lights a break.

Some of you live in places where A/C is a must. If that is the case for you, try and be smart about it/use sparingly.
